The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu’s administration have been urged by the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) to put more emphasis on resolving Nigerians’ escalating security and economic issues rather than on early political campaigns.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, signed a statement that said as much.

The ACF expressed disappointment that the APC seems more focused on getting ready for the 2027 elections than on meeting the urgent needs of the populace, particularly in the North where insecurity is on the rise.

“The ruling party seems more obsessed with early campaigns, defections, and political moves for re-election than with tackling the real problems facing the country,” the ACF said.

The forum noted that government policies and activities have not yet produced significant solutions, and it expressed serious concern over the growing insecurity, especially in northern states.

Additionally, it denounced what it called careless public spending during a period when many Nigerians are fighting for their lives.

“A most perverse illustration of reckless profligacy of public expenditure has been the revelation about insertions in the 2025 federal budget for the provision of streetlights at a staggering and unimaginable cost of over N260 million each,” the group said.

“That there has to date been no official denial of such crassly reckless and surreal insertions attests to the insensitivity of public officials and political representatives to the plight of ordinary Nigerians.”

The ACF cautioned that widespread dissatisfaction and hopelessness could result from ongoing disregard for the needs of the populace.

In spite of the fact that several state governors and towns are in grave danger, it chastised security personnel for their head-in-the-sand remarks.

“Delusional hubris and head-in-the-sand claims continue to characterise pronouncements by officials charged with responsibilities for security,” it stated.

The ACF commended Nigerians for their ability to bounce back from adversity and celebrate significant events like Eid-el-Kabir.

It took use of the occasion to extend cordial wishes to the Muslim community and exhort Nigerians to uphold principles such as dedication, solidarity, and sacrifice.
