Fresh Development Emerges Over Strategic Hormuz Waterway

Iran and Oman have finalised an agreement on the geographical coordinates for a proposed secure shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei disclosed on Wednesday that a joint statement detailing the major agreements and considerations reached by both countries will be released shortly.

Under the proposed arrangement, vessels entering the Persian Gulf will sail through a lane controlled by Iran, while ships leaving the Gulf will use a separate route managed by Oman.

Iran’s supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is expected to approve the agreement, although it remains uncertain whether charges will be introduced for security and environmental protection, as previously speculated.

Baghaei, however, cautioned that the agreement with Oman would not automatically ensure safe navigation for vessels because of the United States naval blockade and “other actions against Iran and its interests.”

Tehran and Muscat have spent the last two months negotiating the framework, with technical, legal, security and environmental issues addressed by officials and representatives from both sides.

Meanwhile, Italy has urged Iran to keep the Strait of Hormuz open without imposing tolls or restrictions, stressing that unrestricted maritime movement is vital for regional security and the global economy.

On Wednesday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani held discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, on developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, its effect on international commercial shipping, and the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.
