Armed assailants have attacked officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State, making away with three packs of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The incident was confirmed by the police on Sunday, becoming the latest security concern ahead of the August 15 governorship election in the state.

In a statement released in Osogbo, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said about 10 suspected thugs invaded Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area, where INEC personnel were conducting PVC distribution.

According to Ojelabi, the attackers fired multiple gunshots into the air, forcing the electoral officials to flee before escaping with three packs of Permanent Voter Cards.

The police spokesperson disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and directed that a thorough investigation be launched to identify, arrest and prosecute those behind the incident.

“Tactical and intelligence assets have been deployed, and efforts have been intensified to apprehend the perpetrators and recover the stolen PVCs,” Ojelabi said.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism and strict compliance with the rule of law in carrying out its constitutional duties.

Ojelabi appealed to residents to remain peaceful, respect the law and refrain from actions capable of heightening tension across the state.

He also urged members of the public and eyewitnesses with credible information that could aid the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its emergency lines.

The police spokesperson warned that anyone attempting to exploit the incident to incite violence or disturb public peace would face the full weight of the law.

Ojelabi further revealed that officers of the Osun State Police Command had restored calm in Ile-Ife after suspected thugs who gathered around the Mayfair Garage area became unruly, temporarily disrupting public order.

He assured residents that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring peace and security throughout the state.
