A nationwide voter registration awareness campaign for herders has been initiated by the Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria, KACRAN.

In a statement sent to reporters on Monday, Khalil Moh’d Bello, the Association’s national president, revealed this.

The initiative started last Thursday in Yobe State’s Jakusko Local Government Area in reaction to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s decision to resume the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) process, the statement said.

“KACRAN recognizes the importance of this process for its members and is committed to ensuring that pastoralists are not disenfranchised,” the Association said.

The Association also pointed out that in spite of the difficulties posed by herders’ work, which frequently keeps them in isolated locations, and the intricacy of the digital registration procedure, it is necessary to enable them to fully engage in the democratic process.

“The goal of this sensitization campaign is to: “Educate herders on how to register children who have turned 18.

“Assist members who have lost their voter cards or need to update their information due to migration.

“Ensure that pastoralists are well-prepared to vote or be elected in the 2027 general elections,” KACRAN said.

Noting that even prisoners are being registered, KACRAN praised INEC for its inclusivity and said that herders, who are just as worthy of their constitutional rights, ought to be completely included.

In order to give Nigerians more chances to vote for the candidates of their choice, KACRAN called on all governments and well-meaning citizens to assist INEC in its efforts to register more eligible voters, update and rectify voter data, and register new political parties.
