The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) is set to hold its 32nd convocation ceremony on Saturday, where a total of 3,567 undergraduates will graduate. Out of this number, 120 students made First Class, while 1,626 finished with Second Class Upper.
A further breakdown of the graduating students shows that 1,624 made Second Class Lower, 164 finished with Third Class, and 33 are graduates of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to the undergraduate degrees, there will also be 30 postgraduate diplomas, 274 master’s degrees, and 136 PhD holders who will be part of the convocation.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the university has added eight new academic programs, including Library and Information Science, Industrial Chemistry, Cyber Security, and Software Engineering. The university now runs 38 fully accredited programs by the National University Commission with 54 departments.
In terms of research, the university has made significant progress, with the National University Commission approving six research proposals worth over N171 million. Many of the university’s scholars have also won international grants amounting to several thousands of dollars and Euros.
Prof. Kehinde praised Tetfund for its support, noting that 19 projects are currently being undertaken by Tetfund in the university. He also emphasized the need for public-private partnerships to drive an increase in food production, citing the university’s collaboration with 30 organizations as an example.
Furthermore, the university has received over N133 million from the National Education Loans Fund for the first batch of 1,300 students who applied for the student loan. Another batch of 1,638 students is waiting to be credited for the year 2025.
The convocation ceremony will feature a lecture by Mohammed Ibrahim, the executive secretary of the National Agricultural Development Fund, an exhibition of farming machinery, and the honoring of two past vice-chancellors of the university. Prof. Olusola Oyewole and Prof. Kolawole Salako will have some monuments named after them in recognition of their contributions to the university.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kehinde, expressed his excitement about the convocation ceremony, stating that it was a significant milestone for the university and its graduates. He also commended the efforts of the university’s staff and students, saying that their hard work and dedication had contributed to the university’s success.
