Government remands TikToker over cross-dressing, ‘immoral’ content

Popular TikTok personality, Abubakar Kilina, has been ordered into custody by a magistrate’s court in Kano following his arraignment on charges brought forward by the Kano State Censorship Board.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the board’s spokesperson, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, accused Kilina of engaging in cross-dressing, using offensive language, and exhibiting inappropriate conduct on social media platforms.

The board stated that such behavior runs contrary to the moral and religious principles upheld within the state. The matter was presented before the No-Man’s-Land Magistrate Court, where Kilina admitted guilt to the allegations.

The prosecution was led by legal practitioner, Barrister Garzali Maigari Bichi.

Presiding over the case, Magistrate Hajiya Halima Wali ordered that Kilina remain in custody from June 4 until June 17, 2025, as the court prepares to deliver its verdict.

Representing the Executive Secretary of the Censorship Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, a statement reiterated the agency’s ongoing commitment to monitoring and regulating digital content that contradicts the cultural and ethical norms of the region.

He cautioned that individuals who exploit online platforms to promote content deemed immoral will face consequences.

Kilina’s situation is among several similar actions taken by the Censorship Board in its ongoing efforts to curb the activities of digital creators in the state.

In recent months, multiple TikTok influencers have been charged with related offenses. Some of these cases have ended in convictions, with penalties that include both fines and imprisonment.
