Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has argued that governments operating under Shariah law should take responsibility for funding mass marriage initiatives with public resources.

In a post shared on his Facebook page on Thursday, Gumi said governments in societies governed by Shariah have an obligation to address social challenges linked to the prohibition of sexual relations outside marriage.

The Islamic scholar maintained that government support for individuals who lack the financial means to marry should be regarded as part of effective governance, particularly in jurisdictions where prostitution, fornication, adultery and promiscuity are prohibited by religious teachings and state laws.

According to him, public funds could properly be deployed to assist young people who urgently need to get married, as well as women who have limited chances of securing suitable spouses.

“In a Shariah law-driven state, where prostitution, fornication, adultery, and promiscuity are prohibited by both divine and state laws, using public funds to facilitate the marriage of women who are in excess of the available pool of eligible men, or of any young person in dire need of marriage, is a legitimate and responsible component of good governance,” he wrote.
