According to state media, a shooting attack at the Supreme Court building in Tehran on Saturday claimed the lives of two judges.
“This morning, a gunman infiltrated the Supreme Court in a planned act of assassination of two brave and experienced judges. The two judges were martyred in the act,” the judiciary’s Mizan Online website reported.
Following the shootings, Mizan claimed the attacker “killed himself.”
Another person was hurt in the attack, according to state news agency IRNA.
Ali Razini and Muhammad Moghisseh were the two judges who were killed, according to Mizan, who also stated that they were involved in cases “fighting crimes against national security, espionage, and terrorism.”
Judiciary spokesman Asghar Jahangir stated on state television later on Saturday that “a person armed with a handgun entered the room” of the two judges and shot them.
The motive behind their killing were not immediately obvious, but Mizan claimed the assailant was not involved in any cases before the Supreme Court, without offering further details on the attacker’s identity.
Mizan added that authorities reported that an investigation had been opened into the incident.
According to the US Department of the Treasury, veteran judge Moghisseh, 68, was sanctioned by the US in 2019 for having “overseen countless unfair trials, during which charges went unsubstantiated and evidence was disregarded.”
According to Mizan, the 71-year-old Razini had previously been the subject of an assassination attempt in 1998 by attackers “who planted a magnetic bomb in his vehicle.” Razini held a number of significant posts in Iran’s court.
Though assaults targeting judges are rare, Iran has experienced a series of shootings targeting high-profile persons over the last years.
After leading Friday prayers in the southern city of Kazeroun in October, a Shiite Muslim preacher was shot and killed.
Abbas Ali Soleimani, a prominent preacher, was also shot dead at a bank in the northern Mazandaran province in April 2023.
Furthermore, two shooters entered Hassan Moghaddas’ automobile in the middle of a crowded Tehran business district in August 2005 and killed the well-known Iranian judge.
Two years later, two individuals found guilty of his murder were publicly hanged.
