The Kwara State Government has issued a cautionary advisory to residents living in areas vulnerable to flooding, urging them to move to elevated and safer locations.

This directive was made public through a statement released by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. It comes in response to a flood warning issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre in Abuja, which forecasted heavy rainfall across various parts of the country in the coming days.

According to the statement, although the flood risk alert spans multiple regions nationwide, particular attention was drawn to Jebba and nearby communities in Moro Local Government Area, which are identified as high-risk zones within Kwara State.

The government’s alert aligns with the current peak of the rainy season—a time often marked by intense rainfall, flash flooding, and associated challenges.

While no significant flooding incidents have occurred so far within the state, officials emphasized that the warning is a preventive step to ensure residents and emergency response teams are adequately prepared.

People living in flood-prone or low-lying zones were advised to avoid flooded roads and submerged paths during periods of heavy rain. They were also encouraged to clear blocked drainage systems and keep water channels free of debris around their homes and in public areas.

In addition, the government recommended that residents stay updated through trusted weather information sources and pay attention to official advisories. Early indicators of possible flooding, such as increasing water levels or drains spilling over, should be reported promptly to the appropriate local authorities or designated emergency services.

The Ministry stressed that this alert is part of the state’s broader strategy to minimize the impact of potential disasters and to safeguard both lives and property. Residents were reminded to stay calm, stay informed, and take all necessary precautions as the rainy season progresses.
