Operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, have apprehended a 30-year-old man identified as Muhammad Abubakar over alleged involvement in transporting firearms in Kano State.

The suspect was paraded at the DSS State Command headquarters in Kano, where officials disclosed that he was intercepted while allegedly conveying four RPG tubes, three AK-47 rifles, and two empty magazines to Funtua in Katsina State.

According to the DSS, the suspect, who works as a transporter, was arrested in Gezawa Local Government Area following credible intelligence received by security operatives.

“He was arrested in Gezawa Local Government area of Kano State following Intelligence tip off.

“Upon interrogation, the suspect said he collected the items from one Bello in Maigatari border area, in Jigawa state, for onward delivery in the insecurity prone area.

“The suspect confessed that he was to be settled, N450,000 upon delivery of the items, before he was arrested,” the DSS said

While speaking with journalists, the suspect claimed the operation was his first involvement in such activity and expressed remorse over the incident.

“I hail from Mokwa in Niger State, from where I transport passengers to Kano and return to Abuja or Mokwa.

“Recently, one Bello pressurised me to help him transport some guns from Maigatari.

“I didn’t know him, we only spoke on the phone. That was the first time we met and my first engagement with him.

“Initially, I told him I was not going, but, after one week of mounting pressure on me, I went to him yesterday, and he brought out the guns.

“I was arrested on the way while transporting the guns to Funtua,” the suspect said.

The suspect further stated that he could no longer remember the identity of the individual who was supposed to receive the weapons, adding that he was only given a telephone contact for the delivery.

“I know the guns are meant for robbery, but I was destined to be arrested in this circumstance.

“We agreed he will pay me N450,000 upon delivery,” the suspect said.

The DSS disclosed that the suspect would face prosecution while efforts are ongoing in collaboration with other security agencies to track down other individuals connected to the operation.
