Paraguay manager Gustavo Alfaro has insisted he has no intention of apologising to France head coach Didier Deschamps over allegations that insulting remarks were directed at the French tactician from the Paraguay bench during their Round of 16 clash on Saturday.

Alfaro maintained that he was unaware of any offensive comments made by members of his technical area and therefore could not apologise for an incident he did not witness.

The controversy emerged after Deschamps accused the Paraguay bench of hurling insults during the encounter.

The match itself was also marked by a series of contentious officiating decisions from Uzbek referee Ilgiz Tantashev.

During the game, three French players received yellow cards, while no member of the Paraguay side was cautioned.

Paraguay defender Gustavo Valazquez was involved in an incident that appeared to leave Kylian Mbappe on the ground after a challenge, while Matias Galarza escaped punishment despite fouls on both the French captain and Jules Kounde.

“I could have done without the insults on the bench. Especially some of them,” Deschamps said (as per Football 365).

Alfaro, however, rejected the accusation, saying, “Football isn’t war. I’m not going to apologise for something that, to my knowledge, didn’t happen. However, I am completely opposed to this kind of behaviour. If I had heard such remarks, I would have reacted immediately myself. It’s unacceptable. I am totally against it.”

He added, “The first thing I did after the final whistle was to go and find Didier Deschamps. I wished him all the best in reaching the final and becoming world champion. I had already told him before the match: he has a fantastic team.”

Despite the controversy, Deschamps has continued his impressive World Cup record, guiding Les Bleus to a fourth consecutive quarter-final appearance as Kylian Mbappe and his teammates pursue a third world title after their triumphs in 1998 and 2018.
