Amid rumours of an assassination, the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Daniel Adefemi Okunade, a staff member of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has been taken over by Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.

Top ranking official Okunade of CBN’s Internal Audit Department was shot in the head on Tuesday as she was making her way back from work by alleged assassins.

He was shot and killed within the Koroduma Community of Nasarawa State, close to Abuja, at the Wisdom Supermarket, also known as the Abdullahi Supermarket. He had gone there to buy bread and other supplies for his family.

Despite the fact that Nasarawa State police have investigated the killing, it has been learned that the Inspector General of Police has assumed control of the investigation at the request of the CBN management.

In addition to having the IGP take over the inquiry, there are rumours that the CBN is about to transfer the deceased’s body, for security purposes, from the Mararaba Medical Centre in Mararaba to Asokoro General Hospital in Abuja.

According to information obtained by our correspondent, the Inspector General of Police sent forensic experts from Force Headquarters in Abuja to the scene of the incident as soon as he granted the CBN’s request.

The manager of the supermarket, who narrowly avoided death, was questioned by the police right away, and then the CCTV tape was viewed to obtain information directly from the source and a lead towards identifying and tracking down the perpetrators.

Along with the CBN employees, three other people were also killed; their identities are unknown. However, it was learned that one of them was employed by the Federal High Court in Abuja; his identity was withheld for security reasons.

According to information obtained, the CBN expressed grave concerns and suspicions regarding the staff member’s death because the guys of the underworld did not touch his Toyota Venza automobile, which was parked outside the supermarket.

The shooters allegedly shot the CBN guy, searched him, and then hurried away when they realised he was their target—all without actually touching anything in the grocery.

The late Okunade, who was employed by CBN and was from Iree town, close to Osogbo in Osun State, was also reportedly the choirmaster of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), located in Koroduma Community, also referred to as One Man Village.

To keep evidence from being tampered with, the supermarket was under lock and key at the time this article was filed.

According to reports, Abuja agents were completely cooperating with Nasarawa State Police Commissioner of Police (CP) Mr. Umar Shehu Nadada and his deputy in charge of the department’s criminal investigation to conduct a thorough investigation that would identify and apprehend the criminals.

Four customers were shot and killed by the thugs who broke into the shop at 8:45 p.m., according to DSP Ranham Nansel, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, who confirmed the killing to reporters.

“I wish to confirm that on the second of January 2024 at about 8:45 hours some hoodlums numbering about four, attacked Wisdom supermarket at Adeyi Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa state and killed four customers,” Nansel said.
