An alleged immoral affair with a member’s wife has led to the stabbing death of an elder by another elder while delivering a sermon at the pulpit.
Francis Opiyo, 35, was concluding a mini-sermon on handing over the microphone when his attacker struck.
The attacker, whose identity has not been disclosed, had brought a knife to church hidden in his Bible, intent on settling a score.
Worshippers at Ebenezer SDA church in Homa Bay, Migori County, Kenya, were shocked as the incident unfolded.
According to Francis’ elder brother, Joseph Opiyo, the deceased elder preached well and was concluding his session when he handed over to his eventual assailant, as reported by The Standard.
The assailant then removed a knife hidden in the Bible and stabbed Francis on the left side of his chest.
“He neither knew that the colleague had hidden a knife in a Bible nor his intention.
“His colleague stabbed him to death,” Joseph said.
“The assailant’s wife was not in the church but he accused my brother of being her lover.
“He had been suspecting them although nobody had clear evidence of the suspected relationship,” Joseph added.
Though the assailant ran and surrendered to the area Assistant Chief, it did not prevent a mob from moving down to his house and razing it.
“The suspect surrendered to the assistant Chief and we are detaining him at Magunga Police Station”, Suba South Sub-county Police Commander Caxton Ndunda said, adding: “We are interrogating him so that he can be charged,” Ndunda said.
“The assailant has told my officers that the deceased man was in a sexual relationship with his wife. But this should not have led to death. He ought to have sought the intervention of clan elders or the church leadership to solve the issue instead of the violence,” Ndunda said.
The woman allegedly involved in the immoral affair was not immediately identified. The body of the victim was transported to Sori Town in Migori County.
The police commander appealed to residents to seek appropriate channels for resolving social conflicts, rather than resorting to violence and murder.
