The coroner’s inquest into the death of Nkanu, the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is set to begin on April 14, 2026, as planned by the Lagos State Judiciary.
Nkanu’s death on January 7, 2026, due to complications related to a number of preparatory medical procedures was recalled.
After the incident, the family issued a legal notice to the involved hospital, claiming that medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to the child’s death.
Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji of the Yaba Magistrate Court set the date for the inquest following formal announcements of appearances by counsel for all parties involved.
Kemi Pinheiro represented the Adichie family, while Adebola Rahman acted on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General.
Legal representatives from Euracare and Atlantis Hospital were also in attendance at the court.
Magistrate Adetunji indicated that the Attorney-General had requested the start of the inquest, and pointed out that the Lagos State Government is interested in guaranteeing a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the death.
“The Lagos State Government is also bereaved; that is why the Attorney-General has taken this step. It is not just the family of the deceased that is affected,” she said.
All parties were instructed by the court to submit and share their witness statements prior to the hearing.
The magistrate stated that the proceedings’ main goal is to ascertain the precise cause of death.
The autopsy findings will be presented at the start of the inquest.
The family’s counsel notified the court of their plan to submit evidence indicating alleged severe medical negligence, which includes accusations of potential overdose, wrongful prescriptions, improper propofol administration, and misdiagnoses.
The family anticipates calling five independent medical experts as witnesses, in addition to the child’s father, who is a medical doctor.
Additionally, the magistrate determined that Euracare would present its case at the start of the inquest, with the Adichie family submitting their evidence afterward, followed by Atlantis Hospital.
The case was postponed to April 14 for the official start of proceedings.
