Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has argued that President Bola Tinubu’s visit to Benue State would have been more respectful if he had stayed away entirely, rather than showing up and displaying what he described as a lack of empathy toward the suffering of the people.

According to Farotimi, the only voice that truly mattered during the president’s stop in Benue was that of the Tor Tiv V, James Ayatse.

He noted that Ayatse described the violent incidents as a “calculated, well-planned, full-scale genocidal invasion and land grabbing campaign by herder terrorists and bandits.”

Farotimi made these remarks on Thursday while speaking during The Morning Brief program on Channels Television.

“I must say very quickly that it would have been better if the president didn’t go.

“The only thing worthy of anybody’s time was the words of the Tor Tiv, who spoke extensively to the reality of the situation in the Benue Trough and spoke eloquently to the pains of the victims.

“Other than that, all the president had to offer were mere windows into his preoccupation and what truly concerns his aides and assistants,” Farotimi stated.

The president had traveled to Benue on Wednesday in a bid to respond to the recent wave of violent attacks in the region.

It’s important to note that over 200 people in Guma Local Government Area were reportedly killed in recent days by suspected armed herders, triggering widespread anger among the populace.
