Judge threatens Trump with jail term as he is fined $1,000 for gag order violation again in ‘hush money’ case

Donald Trump was given a $1,000 fine by the judge overseeing his hush money trial for breaking his gag order, and the former president was forewarned that further infractions would result in jail time.

Since the trial began last month, Trump has been penalised twice for making offensive remarks against witnesses, this time with a fine.

For nine violations last week, he was fined $9,000.

On Monday, May 6, Judge Juan M. Merchan issued a warning, stating that while jail time was “the last thing I want to do,” further violations of the gag order could result in it.

As the trial moves into its third week of testimony on Monday, the prosecution is focusing on their main witness, Michael Cohen, a former attorney and personal fixer for President Trump who entered a guilty plea to federal charges relating to the hush money payments.

Defence lawyers want to subject Cohen to a brutal cross-examination in an attempt to damage his reputation among the jury.

Trump is charged with 34 felonies for allegedly fabricating financial records in relation to payments made to suppress potentially embarrassing news.

Prosecutors claim that in addition to paying Cohen incentives and additional sums, Trump’s business, the Trump Organisation, reimbursed Cohen for payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

The transactions were allegedly fraudulently recorded in the business’s records as legal fees, according to the prosecution.

Trump has entered a not-guilty plea and refuted any misconduct or sexual interactions with any of the women.
