In order to guarantee the free, fair, and credible conduct of the August 16 bye-elections in the Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency, Zaria Kewaye State Constituency, and Basawa State Constituency, Isa Mohammed Ashiru, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for governor of Kaduna State in the 2023 elections, has made a plea to Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and law enforcement organizations.
Additionally, he urged all parties involved to perform their role in making the exercise a success in order to maintain the exercise’s reputation.
According to him, “The responsibility for the conduct of free and fair elections in the three constituencies should be patriotically discharged by all the relevant organs.”
In addition to taking concrete measures to allay current concerns that the election’s outcome may have been predetermined, he clarified that electoral officials and security agencies must establish favorable conditions that permit eligible voters to exercise their rights without fear.
He voiced alarm about claims of deliberate manipulation to benefit the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Ashiru, leaders who are embraced by the populace can only be produced through an open process.
He said that the holding of transparent elections was the only way to ensure that credible leadership emerged at all levels, and that it was crucial for the electoral umpire and law enforcement to understand that this was the irreducible minimum for all Nigerians.
