Killing of 5 soldiers: What CCTV cameras can do

The governors in the area have been urged by the Coalition of Southeast Youth Leaders, COSEYL, to install closed-circuit television, CCTV, cameras in critical locations to deter crime.

The coalition said this in a statement released Monday by Goodluck Ibem, its president general.

Ibem claims that the cameras will help law enforcement identify and apprehend criminal elements causing unrest in the area.

He pointed out that if there had been CCTV cameras, the attackers who attacked a military checkpoint in Aba, Abia State, last week and murdered roughly five troops could have been readily located and taken out.

In light of the tragic death of the five troops, he lamented the sudden arrest practices of certain security personnel.

In the statement, it says: “In this 21st century, we should be exploring modern technology for the protection of lives and properties.

“It is totally wrong for security agents to engage in massive arrest of citizens just in a bid to gather information about a crime committed. This practice has led to the arrest of innocent persons who are tortured for no just cause.

“We, therefore, call on Governor Otti and other South East governors to as a matter of urgency install CCTV cameras in order to assist security agencies perform their lawful duties effectively.”
