The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has insisted that the support of 30 state governors will not guarantee President Bola Tinubu victory in the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso argued that the 30 governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have performed poorly and therefore lack the capacity to deliver victory for the President.
The former Kano State governor made the remarks while speaking at a town hall meeting held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday.
Kwankwaso also recalled the experience of former President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that being a sitting president did not prevent him from losing his re-election bid.
He maintained that political power and the backing of several state governors alone may not be enough to determine the outcome of an election.
According to him, the performance of political leaders and the decisions of Nigerians at the polls would ultimately play a major role in determining who emerges victorious in 2027.
Kwankwaso’s comments come amid growing political activities across the country as parties and key political figures begin positioning themselves ahead of the next presidential election.
“Jonathan was the sitting president, and he lost the election. Those who think that because they have more than 30 governors, they cannot lose are making a very big mistake.
“The trend is that those governors and their parties have performed woefully. It is difficult for many of them to even come out and campaign because, from top to bottom, they did absolutely nothing,” he said.
