The vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabi’u Kwankwaso, has said the North should not always produce Nigeria’s president.

Kwankwaso made the remark during an interview on News Central Television.

He explained that his decision to contest alongside a presidential candidate from the South reflects the North’s commitment to fairness, justice and mutual respect between both regions.

Responding to the belief held by some that political leadership should permanently remain in the North, Kwankwaso pointed to his current political partnership as proof that such a position is not shared by everyone in the region.

“I don’t have to put it in words. By what I am doing now, being vice to somebody from the South, I don’t think that argument can stand on our side.

“So we believe, North, I can tell you, believe in fairness; we believe in justice and we believe in mutual respect between the South and the North. And that has always been our position,” Kwankwaso said.

His comments come as the NDC intensifies preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with Kwankwaso running alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

It will be recalled that Kwankwaso had earlier turned down an offer to become Obi’s running mate before the 2023 presidential election, stating at the time that the prevailing sentiment in the North favoured retaining power in the region following the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year administration.
