The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has emphasized that the military justice system plays a crucial role in safeguarding the rights of service members while upholding discipline and professionalism within the armed forces.
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja during the launch of a new book titled Justice in the Nigerian Armed Forces: Law and Practice, authored by retired Colonel Ukpe Ukpe Sam, General Musa underscored that justice in military settings extends beyond maintaining order it also ensures transparency and fairness, especially during internal security missions, peacekeeping , and counter-terrorism operations.
“Justice reassures our men and women in uniform that while they defend the nation, their rights are also protected,” he said.
He advocated for comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing equity and accountability within the system, cautioning against the continued use of outdated legal references such as the 1972 Manual of Military Law. Musa recommended a unified legal framework aligned with the Armed Forces Act 2024 and recent updates approved by the President.
Colonel Ukpe also stressed that the contributions of military legal officers in courts-martial should count toward their promotion and appointment considerations.
