Minister visits Alma Mater, offers scholarships to bright students

The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has urged public school students to rise above their humble beginnings and strive for excellence. Tijani, a product of public school himself, visited his alma mater, Anglican Grammar School, Quarry, Abeokuta, to encourage students and motivate them to be great in life.

“Where we come from is both important and should not limit where we are heading,” Tijani said. “I was a student in this school, and the lessons learnt in this school shaped and contributed so much to who I am today.”

The minister announced a variety of annual scholarship packages for 88 students, including an N100,000 scholarship prize and a laptop for the top three students in each level. He also adopted a block of classrooms and the science laboratory for renovation.

“We have also adopted one of the storey buildings; we are going to furnish it with furniture and equip the classrooms with smart boards,” Tijani said. “In the same vein, we have also adopted the Science Lab for a 100 per cent renovation and will ensure that it is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.”

Tijani emphasised that the students’ humble beginnings should not limit their potential. “Coming back to the school is also a way of encouraging the students here to believe that their humble beginning of today notwithstanding, they can also become a minister in the future; they can become ambassadors; they can become a governor.”

In a separate event, Tijani highlighted the Federal Government’s investment in laying 90,000km of fibre optic cables across the country to improve internet connectivity and enhance wealth and job creation in the digital economy. He noted that the digital economy sector contributes between 16 and 18% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, with plans to increase it to 21%.

The minister also emphasized the importance of technology in agriculture, stating that Nigeria cannot produce enough food without introducing technology. “There is no way Nigeria would produce enough food to feed her citizens without the introduction of technology,” he said.

Tijani advocated for a combination of agriculture and technology to revolutionise farming, guarantee food security, create jobs, and increase income. “We need to leverage on technology to boost food production,” he said.

By combining agriculture and technology, Tijani believes that Nigeria can drive down food prices, curb foreign exchange wastage, and increase local production. “Ukraine would not have been able to hold on this long in the conflict with Russia if the country was not a major producer of grains using technology,” he noted.
