Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, has revealed that telecommunications rates would shortly rise, although they won’t be as much as the operators’ projected 100% increase.

Tijani stated that conversations and interactions were still going on following a stakeholders’ meeting with mobile network operators in Abuja on Wednesday.

In order to safeguard our citizens, we as a government must find a balance that allows these businesses to continue making large investments. “As a sector, we must make sure that we unite and that, from a regulatory perspective, we implement the appropriate regulations that can guarantee the expansion of this sector,” Tijani stated.

The government was concerned with finding a compromise between safeguarding Nigerians and allowing telecom companies to keep making large investments in the industry, the minister added. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of appropriate restrictions to ensure sustainable growth.
Dr. Aminu Maida, the NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman, said that although operators had asked for a 100% price rise, it was unlikely to be granted. According to him, the precise percentage would be revealed after continuing stakeholder engagements in a week or two.

He clarified that in order for customers to comprehend the costs associated with voice calls, SMS, and data, operators would now need to streamline their pricing templates.
