Mother seeks help on how to tell her 30 -year old daughter that her brother is her father

Children are a gift from God to their parents and always make their birth families happy.

An anonymous mother contacted a magazine to ask for guidance on how to tell her 30-year-old daughter a shocking fact: her brother is actually her biological father.

The lady, who wishes to remain anonymous, explained the circumstances in a letter to The Atlantic’s Dear Therapist section.

She disclosed that when they were married, her spouse had two grown children from a prior relationship. Her spouse had had a vasectomy years prior, which was irreversible, but the couple still desired to have a child together. They were forced to look for a substitute.

“We didn’t want to use a sperm bank,” she wrote, “so we asked my husband’s son to be a sperm donor. We felt that was the best decision. Our child would have my husband’s genetic material, and we knew the health, personality, and intelligence of my stepson. He agreed to help us with that.”

Their daughter is now 30 years old, and the couple followed through on their plan. But the mother finds it difficult to tell the truth:

“How do we tell her that her ‘father’ is actually her grandfather, her ‘brother’ is her biological father, her ‘sister’ is her aunt, and her ‘nephew’ is her stepbrother? We are worried, confused, and struggling to tell her. This is also difficult for my husband because he wants our daughter to know that he will always be her father.”

Columnist and licensed psychologist Lori Gottlieb responded to the letter by pointing out that the daughter would have to face two difficult realities. She would discover not only who her biological father is, but also that the “parents” she has trusted for thirty years have been hiding the truth from her.
