The First Lady stressed that the current difficulties are not the fault of the administration, which is still in its infancy.
After the fuel subsidy was eliminated, First Lady Sen. Remi Tinubu declared that her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was not to blame for the current suffering in the country.
The elimination of subsidies, which was announced during Tinubu’s inauguration on May 29, 2023, has caused the price of gasoline to skyrocket from N198 to N1,030 per liter.
The First Lady underlined Thursday that the administration is still in its infancy and should not be held accountable for the present difficulties while speaking at the Palace of Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.
She stated,“We are just 18 months into our administration; we are not the cause of the current situation; we are trying to fix it and secure the future.”
She further added, “We know that subsidy has been removed, but with God on our side, in the next two years, Nigeria will be greater than this. Those who attempted removing subsidies before could not see it through. But with your prayers in the next two years, we will build a nation for the future.”
In addition, the First Lady thanked Nigerians for their position and reaffirmed their humility, assuring them of President Tinubu’s sincerity.
She said, “We give glory to God for our status, myself and my husband, we are not greedy but we thank God for what God has done for us. It is not common for rich people to get to this seat but I am grateful to God, we can not disappoint Nigeria and with the help of God, we are getting to the promised land in no distant time.”
These statements were given by Oluremi Tinubu during the opening of a 2.7-kilometer road and a hostel that the Ooni of Ife had donated to Ọbafẹmi Awolọwọ University (OAU), Ile-Ife, and named in her honor. In order to support the university’s ongoing growth, she also gave N1 billion.
The First Lady has served as a role model since her days as the First Lady of Lagos State, and the Ooni of Ife commended her for her beneficial influence during the ceremony.
“There is no food for the lazy man, even God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day,” Mrs. Tinubu said in her speech on the value of hard labor, especially for Nigerian young, in addition to discussing economic difficulties. She asked Nigerians to hold onto their optimism for a better future and to exercise patience with the current government.
“We are trying all our efforts to ensure that the economy is stabilised and masses are living meaningful lives since the removal of fuel subsidy,” she said in closing, restating the government’s commitment to sustainable development and economic stabilisation.
