Prince Paul Ikonne, a leader of the All Progressives Congress and former executive secretary of the National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), has expressed concern over suspected extortion by vendors in Ariaria and other important Abia State marketplaces.

Ikonne sounded the alarm in a statement that his spokesperson, Ujo Justice, provided to ZINGTIE on Monday.

He accused the state’s authorities of intimidating and harassing traders in Ariaria and other important markets.

According to him, Abia State government appointees have weaponized revenue, turning a lawful civic responsibility into a terrible tool of oppression.

He stated that traders are forced to pay an extra N36,000 fee, which pushes thousands of struggling ones into further economic agony.

“This is not governance; this is tyranny,” Prince Ikonne declared.

“I am worried that the present Abia state government has normalized the sealing of shops and properties, indiscriminate arrests, court summons, and humiliating treatment of Abians whose only crime is their inability to meet oppressive and inflated levies.

“The rate of molestation and intimidation by agents of this government is alarming, No democratic society should subject its citizens to such cruelty.”
