In their opening 2023 Africa Cup of Nations match, Equatorial Guinea held Nigeria to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.
Ivan Salvador stunned the Super Eagles by opening the score with a beautiful finish.
Within two minutes, though, the three-time African champions were tied as Victor Osimhen headed home Ademola Lookman’s cross at the highest point.
The second half of the game ended without any goals.
What four lessons did we take away from the experience, then?
- Juan Micha’s men have a history of being enormous killers; thus, Equatorial Guinea is no joke. And tonight, they nearly caught the Super Eagles off guard. When Ivory Coast against Nigeria takes off, they may lead Group A. They play Guinea-Bissau next.
- Nigeria has a difficult task ahead of them: Against Equatorial Guinea, the Eagles appeared to be an unserious team. The fact that their second game is against the hosts does not help. Should we perform poorly against the Elephants, the warning flags will go up, and we may have to leave early.
- Peseiro still needs more tactical flexibility: Once more, Jose Peseiro gave the impression that he needed more tactical flexibility by failing to motivate his team or make pivotal substitutes. Nigeria appeared to be a poorly managed team that needed more inspiration and motivation to succeed.
- Osimhen needs to do better: Victor Osimhen bore the primary responsibility for the Super Eagles’ hopes. Even though the Napoli forward leveled the score, he squandered golden opportunities that could have guaranteed all three points. Osimhen still has two games to live up to his reputation as the team’s talisman.
