The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has initiated the deployment of 600 Nigerian Army personnel to India for specialised training in jungle and mountain warfare, in a move aimed at improving combat effectiveness in challenging environments and boosting the military’s ability to protect Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, disclosed in a statement that the first group of 300 soldiers left Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The personnel travelled aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft, a C-17 and an Airbus A321.
The Coordinator of the Nigerian Military Training Support and Advisory Team at the Army Headquarters Department of Army Training, Major General UG Yusuf, represented the COAS at the departure ceremony. The Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria was also present.
The initiative reflects the Army Chief’s commitment to developing a professional, flexible and combat-ready force capable of tackling terrorists, insurgents and other criminal groups operating in forests, mountainous regions and similarly difficult locations.
The exercise is also consistent with his command philosophy, which emphasises operational effectiveness, practical training, personnel development and improved combat preparedness.
Through the specialised programme, the personnel are expected to acquire advanced skills in jungle and mountain warfare, enhance their ability to manoeuvre during operations and improve their capacity to prevent criminal groups from using difficult terrain as safe havens.
The training is also expected to strengthen defence cooperation between Nigeria and India, while advancing the COAS’s efforts to maintain a resilient and mission-ready Army capable of defending the country’s sovereignty and protecting lives and property.
Plans are ongoing to transport the remaining 300 personnel to India to participate in the training.
