Nigerian lawmakers move to create Office of Prime Minister

A bill to establish the Office of the Prime Minister as the head of government and the Office of the President as the head of state, along with provisions for the election process to these offices, has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill was part of 32 constitutional amendment bills that were approved in the second reading on Thursday.

Among these bills is a proposal to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, to introduce reserved seats for women in both the National Assembly and state houses of assembly.

Another bill seeks to amend the Constitution to shorten the time for resolving pre-election petitions and to establish pre-election tribunals to handle such matters, along with regulating the suspension process for National Assembly members from their legislative duties.

Additionally, a bill proposing to amend the Constitution to revise the eligibility requirements for individuals running for President, Vice-President, governors, and deputy governors also passed its second reading.

Furthermore, a bill to amend the Constitution regarding the Federal Capital Territory’s status in presidential elections, as well as proposals for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State, also advanced to the second reading.

To date, a total of 113 constitutional amendment bills have passed the second reading.
