What you should know as Nigerian lawmakers move to create Office of Prime Minister

In the House of Representatives, a bill to establish the Office of the Prime Minister as head of state and the Office of the President as head of government, as well as to provide a framework for the election process for both positions, has passed second reading.

The bill was one of thirty-two bills amending the Constitution that passed the House of Representatives on Thursday.

A measure to amend the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to allocate certain seats to women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly is also included in the list of bills.

Another is a bill for an Act to amend the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to shorten the time frame for deciding pre-election petition cases, establish pre-election tribunals for pre-election cases, and govern the procedure for removing a National Assembly member from their legislative responsibilities.

Additionally, a bill to amend the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution to examine the qualifications for governors, deputy governors, and the president and vice president was approved on second reading.

Additionally, bills for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State, as well as an Act to amend the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 Constitution’s provisions to review the Federal Capital Territory’s status with regard to the election of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s president, passed second reading.

To date, about 113 bills to amend the Constitution have passed second reading.
