United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stepped down from his positions as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer announced his resignation on Monday outside 10 Downing Street, stating that his time in office had always been guided by what he considered to be in the best interest of the country.
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.
In his statement, Starmer said he had officially informed King Charles III of his decision to resign and instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of electing a new leader. He noted that nominations would open on 9 July, with the transition expected to be completed before Parliament reconvenes in September.
He also stated that he would remain in office for a short period to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
His resignation comes amid increasing pressure within the Labour Party, especially after rival Andy Burnham secured a significant by-election victory in North West England, a development that intensified calls for a leadership change before Parliament returns.
