Public affairs analyst, Comrade Usman Okai Austin, has described the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, as the most professional security chief to have led the country’s secret service.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Okai commended the level of discipline and operational efficiency he said Ajayi had brought to the agency since assuming office.
He noted that the DSS had moved away from public confrontations and was now placing greater emphasis on intelligence-led operations aimed at identifying and neutralising security threats before they materialise.
“Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi stands out as a thoroughbred professional security strategist,” Okai said. “Under his leadership, the DSS is rebuilding public trust by prioritizing intelligence gathering, operational discretion, and respect for the rule of law.”
Okai highlighted several areas he said reflected improvements within the agency under Ajayi’s leadership.
He identified the increased use of covert operations to disrupt threats before they occur, thereby helping to minimise public panic.
He also cited stronger collaboration between the DSS, military, police and international partners in addressing cross-border security challenges as another area of progress under Ajayi.
“He has introduced modern technology to deal with digital threats, sundry crimes, and attacks on critical infrastructure. His
respect for muman rights, total cessation of arbitrary arrests and detentions have earned him national and international accolades,” noted Okai.
The analyst further pointed to a reduction in unnecessary public confrontations, greater alignment of operations with legal standards, enhanced training and improved welfare packages for field officers and other personnel.
Okai maintained that effective security management requires experienced professionals who understand the internal operations of the service, rather than political interference.
“Ajayi rose through the ranks, and that background shows in his leadership,” Okai added. “He has kept the agency out of politics and restored its standing as an elite intelligence body focused entirely on national security.”
He urged the DSS Director-General to sustain the approach, stressing that a professional and discreet intelligence service remains one of Nigeria’s strongest safeguards against internal security threats.
