The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kano State has clarified that the term “inconclusive elections” has no legal basis in Nigeria’s electoral framework.
Abdu Zango, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), made this statement on Thursday during a meeting with stakeholders at the INEC headquarters in Kano.
The meeting was part of the preparations for the upcoming bye-election and rerun in the Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa state constituencies, which are set for August 16.
Zango explained that the Electoral Act does not recognize the concept of inconclusive elections, despite its usage in past election cycles.
“There is no provision for inconclusive elections in the Electoral Act. INEC is guided strictly by the outcome of valid votes cast and recorded,” he said.
He emphasized INEC’s commitment to conducting transparent elections, declaring winners solely based on lawful and verifiable results.
Zango added that the bye-election in Bagwai/Shanono was necessitated by the death of the incumbent legislator.
Meanwhile, the rerun in Ghari/Tsanyawa will take place in 10 polling units, following a court directive.
He also reassured stakeholders that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be employed for voter accreditation, with results uploaded promptly to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal.
