During an interview with VANGUARD, Adewole Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the 2023 elections, discussed the growing need for political realignment in Nigeria, emphasising the importance of forming a strong coalition with the North to ensure the defeat of President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
He responded to recent rumours about the SDP chairman meeting with former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai and other political players, saying it was part of the process of forming a coalition of like-minded people.
Adebayo feels that for Nigeria’s future, a united front is required, particularly to address the current state of poverty, insecurity, and poor governance under the APC.
According to Adebayo, the SDP consults ordinary Nigerians rather than individual political figures.
He stated that during his recent visit to the North, many people, including members of the ruling party, expressed interest in joining the fight to bring about political change.
These debates, he believes, are critical to moving the country away from the problems it has now.
Adebayo stated unequivocally that the purpose of these groupings is to remove Tinubu from power in 2027.
He suggested that if Nigerians sincerely care about their children’s future, they should vote for a change in government.
The SDP leader also stated that the party opposes the APC because of its role in causing poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and the devaluation of Nigeria’s currency.
“We are consulting with ordinary Nigerians, because it’s not El-Rufai that is going to save the SDP or save the country. It is the people of Nigeria. I have been in the North for a few days; people are listening to El-Rufai.“
“People are listening to other people, and there are so many people who are even in the ruling party, who say, why are you neglecting us? We want to talk to you as well because if anybody loves Nigeria, he needs to know that coming together to get our politics right is the right thing for us to do now.“
“So the SDP is not anti-Tinubu. The SDP is anti-under-development, anti- poverty, anti-insecurity, anti-devaluation of currency, anti-lack of transparency and wastefulness. We are anti–unemployment and Tinubu just happens to produce a lot of those things now.“
“So sometimes, when we talk about it, it will look like, oh, we are against the president, but we’ve been talking about this thing for a long time even under Jonathan. We are consistent about that,” he said.
