The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged organisations engaging Corps members to improve their welfare, warning that employers who fail to provide accommodation and transportation would be blacklisted from participating in the scheme.

He gave the warning while addressing Corps members in Lokoja during an official working visit to Kogi State.

The NYSC boss assured the Corps members that the Federal Government remains committed to safeguarding their security and improving their welfare. He also appealed to state governments, local councils and other stakeholders to strengthen their support for the scheme.

General Nafiu reminded the Corps members that security is a collective responsibility and encouraged them to promptly report any suspicious activities to the appropriate security agencies.

The Director-General also urged them to remain disciplined, committed to their duties and avoid acts capable of tarnishing their image, stressing that they represent their families, alma maters and the NYSC.

He further advised them to take the post-camp Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously so they can master their selected vocational skills before completing their service year.

“Be proactive, identify business opportunities within your host communities, and start making some money for yourselves even now,” he said.

While acknowledging the current economic realities, Nafiu encouraged the Corps members to cultivate the habit of saving, describing it as a key pillar of long-term financial success.

“Take your service year as a training ground for future financial management by managing your finances wisely,” he stressed.

The NYSC Kogi State Coordinator, Mrs. Tochi Chika Chris-Moneke, appreciated the Director-General for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare and security of Corps members and staff.

Mrs. Chris-Moneke also disclosed that the state secretariat is preparing to organise a Corps Employers’ Workshop as well as a Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) programme in the coming weeks.
