Public anger erupted on Saturday after a video circulated online showing police officers allegedly assaulting a young man in the Ijagba area of Ota, Ogun State, over his alleged use of camouflage shorts.
The footage was initially shared on TikTok by HairbyArik before being reposted on X by @Godsboy441.
In the video, the young man was seen handcuffed and pinned to the ground, struggling as officers attempted to force him into a commercial minibus.
His cries for help attracted the attention of nearby residents, who came out in large numbers and confronted the officers over their treatment of him.
“Between you and these young men, who are the thieves? See the way they are beating someone’s child,” a woman was heard saying in the background, while another shouted, “Please come to my aid everyone!”
The officers were reportedly attempting to arrest the man for wearing camouflage clothing, which is prohibited for civilians. However, residents challenged their actions, describing the incident as an act of police brutality.
The video, which has attracted more than 8,900 likes on TikTok, showed a crowd gathering around the officers and demanding that they remove the handcuffs from the man.
Following several minutes of heated exchanges, the officers reportedly abandoned the arrest and left the area, drawing cheers from residents.
The woman who recorded the incident also alleged that the officers threatened to arrest her for filming their actions.
Reacting to the incident on Sunday, the Ogun State Police Command announced that it had identified and apprehended the officers involved.
In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, had directed that immediate action be taken in accordance with established procedures.
“The officers involved have been identified, and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni has ordered immediate action in line with established procedures,” Babaseyi said.
“The Command remains committed to accountability, professional discipline and the highest standards of policing. Further updates will be communicated as developments warrant,” he stated.
In a subsequent statement, the police spokesperson added, “The 4 officers are enroute to the Headquarters”.
ZINGTIE reports that the incident occurred just days before the sixth anniversary of the #EndSARS protests against police brutality, scheduled for October 20.
