The violent standoff at the Peoples Democratic Party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters in Abuja has been called disgraceful and pitiful by Ini Ememobong, the recently elected National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
Ememobong made this claim on Tuesday while answering questions during an interview on “Politics Today,” a Channels Television program that ZINGTIE watches.
He questioned the procedure surrounding the contentious meeting and claimed that the impasse shows a troubling deterioration in Nigeria’s democratic culture.
“Is that a NEC meeting? Every NEC meeting must be monitored by INEC. It’s very shameful and a pity that this is happening after six election cycles.
“Democratic consolidation should be firm. Democratic norms should be valued. They should form part of our way of life. Sadly, every election cycle seems to be getting worse.
“In a democracy, the majority will have their way, and the minority will have their say. But what you have now is a minority trying to impose its will on the majority,” he said.
However, the PDP’s spokesperson warned that party members were in grave risk as a result of the incident.
The attorney accused the ruling party of encouraging animosity against the opposition, pointing out that a number of Nigerians had already died from breathing tear gas.
