Despite pressure from some party leaders, Samuel Anyanwu, the national secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sworn not to leave his post.

He did this while accusing Peter Mbah, the governor of Enugu State, and Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State, of orchestrating a plot to overthrow him before the end of his term.

Speaking to reporters in Abuja on Wednesday, Anyanwu characterized the unrest as politically driven and devoid of constitutional basis.

“There is no vacancy in the office of the National Secretary of the PDP. I remain the substantive National Secretary whose tenure runs until December 2025,” he said.

He insisted that he had officially informed the party and the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, of his decision to take a leave of absence from office in order to run for governor of Imo State in 2023.

“I wrote to the party and to INEC before proceeding on leave. That letter was acknowledged. My deputy only acted on my behalf. At no time did I resign my position,” the former senator explained.

According to him, the job of National Secretary is zoned to the South, and specifically micro-zoned to the South-East, with Imo State being the specified source of nomination. He asked why Enugu State is being pressured to send a replacement.

“If the zoning principle is to be respected, any replacement must come from Imo State, not Enugu. Governor Mbah is pushing for a replacement that violates the PDP’s own zoning formula,” Anyanwu stated.

Former South-East National Vice Chairman Ali Odefa was accused by the former lawmaker of spearheading the campaign against him and misleading Governor Mbah and others with false information.

According to him, Odefa was kicked out of the party and had lost all legal standing.

Citing a January 26, 2025, High Court ruling, the party leader emphasized the decision’s legal significance, claiming that it made any action by Odefa or his supporters unlawful and void.

He also charged Governors Makinde and Mbah with plotting to appoint Sunday Ude-Okoye as secretary through dubious means, such as influencing party employees and using unapproved meeting spaces.

However, he denied rumors that he was loyal to Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and insisted that their friendship had never affected his commitment to the PDP.
