Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) presidential candidate in the general elections 2023, has announced that the party has hired an outside auditor to look into its financial records.
According to the ZINGTIE, Oluchi Opara, the Labour Party’s national treasurer, charged Julius Abure, the party’s national chairman, on Monday of embezzling N3.5 billion.
During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, the party suspended Opara in reaction to the accusation, saying she was being swayed by “external forces” that wanted to undermine the LP.
Furthermore, Abure had threatened to sue Opara for slandering his reputation.
Peter Obi, however, responded to the news during a press conference on Thursday, saying, “we will account for everything now that we have an independent person who will tell us which way forward.”
Obi, who was accompanied by a member of his 2023 campaign team, Aisha Yesufu, said; “I’m not involved in the party’s management and the campaign accounts.
“The money people gave me during the election was paid into one account or the other which was properly managed because I knew there would be days like this. I assure you, we will account for everything.
“For the Party issue, We now have an independent person who will tell us which way forward, that’s why I’m calling on every member of the public with leads to where these millions and billions were paid to come forward.”
