Imo State police have arrested Edith Nwachukwu, a 35-year-old businesswoman, for assaulting her 13-year-old house help, Kelechi Ejieke.

After a minor was rescued from her in Owerri’s popular Relief Market, the suspect was taken into custody by officers from the Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters on Tuesday night, January 21, 2025.

It was discovered that the kid had been accused of taking her money by the suspect.

After learning about the scenario, a journalist from Imo named Chidiebube Okeoma, the founder of the Stand for Humanity Foundation, and a few traders called the police. The cops quickly stepped in, saving the young person and taking the perpetrator into custody.

Okeoma claims that some traders physically rescued the girl from the businesswoman, who had injured her and was allegedly going to get ten more canes to beat her with.

He disclosed that because of the girl’s serious injuries, officers from the Owerri Urban Divisional Police Headquarters had transported her to an Owerri hospital for treatment.

“When I was informed, I quickly alerted the DPO. Thanks to some traders who rescued the minor and also involved the police. At the police station, the woman, who later pleaded for mercy, alleged that her house help had stolen her money, an accusation the girl denied,” he said.

“The woman said she was angry, which is why she battered the minor. The girl revealed she is from Amaeke Adam in Abia State.”

“Our organization, Stand for Humanity Foundation, is deeply interested in this case, and we will ensure justice is served. This should serve as a deterrent to others who dehumanize children. Child battering is a crime, and we will continue to push until such acts are eradicated.”

The state commissioner of police, Aboki Danjuma, has zero tolerance for child abuse and all types of criminal activity, according to SP Henry Okoye, the spokesperson for the State Police Command, who verified the occurrence.

According to Okoye, an investigation into the situation has already begun.
