The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters in Kano, has acknowledged concerns raised by civil society organizations and other stakeholders about the summons issued to Jafar Jafar, editor-in-chief of Daily Nigeria, and its publisher, Audu Umar.

In a statement signed by CSP Bashir Muhammad, the zone’s spokesperson, the police assured the public that the investigation will be conducted fairly, professionally, and impartially.

The statement explained that the police action was taken under the directive of Chief Magistrate Court No. 15, Normans Land Complex, Kano.

The court instructed the police to investigate allegations of criminal conspiracy, defamation, and attempts to incite public unrest against the two media figures, citing section 106(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2019.

Following this, the Assistant Inspector General of Police overseeing Zone One ordered a confidential inquiry, which resulted in the summons for questioning of Jafar Jafar and Audu Umar.

The police emphasized that the court’s order specifically stated that the individuals should not be detained pending the conclusion of the case.

Zone One Headquarters reaffirmed its dedication to upholding professionalism, justice, and integrity throughout the process. It also recognized the crucial role of free expression and an independent press in a democratic society.

“The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, remains committed to serving the public with utmost dedication and professionalism. We will continue to uphold the law and protect the rights of all citizens, while ensuring that justice is served in all matters that come before us.”

The police guaranteed that the rights of both journalists and the public will be respected during the investigation. It appealed to the public to allow the inquiry to proceed without interference and discouraged comments that might compromise its outcome.

The statement further urged civil society groups, media personnel, and other stakeholders to collaborate with law enforcement. The Zone One Command reiterated its mission to enforce the law, safeguard citizens’ rights, and ensure justice in every matter.
