Potter hails Arsenal midfielder, explains why West Ham won 1-0

West Ham United manager Graham Potter has praised Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino, calling him a very dangerous player.

Potter also credited his team’s tactical discipline for their 1-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, noting that his players were “tactically very disciplined and very good overall” in their performance against Mikel Arteta’s side.

Jarrod Bowen’s first-half goal was enough to secure all three points for West Ham at the Emirates.

“Because of what happened against Leicester – Merino coming on and scoring two – we guessed he would start the game,” Potter said during his post-match press conference.

“If you look at how he attacks the box and what he does, he’s incredible at getting on the shoulder of defenders and timing his runs into the box.

“He’s very dangerous, and then you’ve got the quality on the wings and [Martin] Ødegaard putting balls in from all angles. We had to defend that situation well, and I thought we did it as well as we could.”

Potter added: “Massive performance for us.

“I’m delighted for the players and the fans. Tactically very disciplined performance. Really good overall.”

With the win, West Ham remains in 16th place in the Premier League with 30 points from 26 matches.

They will next face Leicester City in their upcoming Premier League match on Thursday.
