Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has pledged to resume free maternity services and distribute welcome packages to newborns in public health facilities to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. This commitment was made on the last day of the five-day workshop on the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative in the state.
Yusuf emphasised that “the project is well aligned with the university’s drive and disposition to sustainable and impact-driven collaboration with international organisations to help manage the menace of plastic waste in Nigeria.” However, this statement seems to be out of context, as it mentions plastic waste management, which is not directly related to the topic of maternal and newborn mortality.
The governor’s representative, Commissioner for Health Dr. Abubakar Labaran, reassured residents of the governor’s commitment to overcoming maternal and newborn mortality. Yusuf announced his approval of a monthly distribution of kits worth millions of naira, free to pregnant women, in over 60 health facilities and 63 primary healthcare centres across the state.
Additionally, the government has introduced free caesarean sections to pregnant women who develop complications during pregnancy to reduce maternal mortality. The governor stated that the workshop has paved the way for the government to conduct research into finding out the root causes of maternal and newborn mortality in the 18 affected Local Government Areas (LGAs) and the state.
Yusuf decried the rate of zero-dose immunisation and the high burden of diphtheria, stating that they contributed to the maternal mortality rate in the state. He assured the Ministry of Health that the handed-over document would be studied and its recommendations implemented as effectively as possible to provide a solution to maternal mortality in Kano with support from development partners.
Commissioner Labaran stated that the health ministry would work closely with relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to upgrade access roads and ensure maternal and newborn mortality is overcome in the state.
