Chinese President Xi Jinping has declared that his nation is “not afraid,” marking his first public response to the growing trade tensions with the United States.
He made the statement during a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing on Friday, as reported by state-run broadcaster CCTV.
The trade dispute, sparked by actions from U.S. President Donald Trump, has disrupted global markets and raised concerns about a potential worldwide economic downturn.
“There are no winners in a trade war, and going against the world will only lead to self-isolation,” Xi said.
“For over 70 years, China’s development has relied on self-reliance and hard work — never on handouts from others, and it is not afraid of any unjust suppression.”
“Regardless of how the external environment changes, China will remain confident, stay focused, and concentrate on managing its own affairs well.”
Xi’s comments were made soon after the White House revealed that the total tariffs placed on Chinese products under President Donald Trump’s administration have reached 145 percent, taking effect right away.
