Prison Scandal: NCoS Takes Action After Death Row Inmate’s TikTok Activity

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS, has removed the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and two other senior officials following a security breach involving a death row inmate who allegedly hosted TikTok live sessions while in custody.

The inmate, identified as Elijah Oyebode, was sentenced to death by hanging in 2019 after an Osun State High Court convicted him of murdering Rofiat Adebisi, a final-year student of Osun State University.

Court records showed that Oyebode gave different accounts of the incident before later denying responsibility during the trial.

The court, however, convicted him after considering medical evidence and other materials presented during the proceedings.

Reports indicated that despite being on death row, Oyebode allegedly remained active on TikTok, with one of his accounts reportedly reaching Level 20 gifting status, allowing him to receive financial gifts during livestreams.

He was also reportedly associated with another TikTok account allegedly created to impersonate a prominent content creator and activist.

Confirming the development in a statement issued on Thursday, the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, JN Osuji, described the incident as a major breach of custodial regulations and prison security protocols.

Osuji disclosed that preliminary investigations showed that the inmate was in unlawful possession of a prohibited mobile phone, which he allegedly used to access social media platforms while incarcerated.

“The device has been recovered and secured as an exhibit for further investigation,” the statement said.

The correctional service also announced that Oyebode had been moved to another custodial facility and placed under heightened security arrangements while investigations continue.

It further stated that the Officer-in-Charge of the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre, along with two other principal officers, had been removed from their positions pending the outcome of the investigation.
