The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent warning to Peter Obi, labeling it a veiled death threat against the 2027 presidential hopeful.

Governor Okpebholo had warned Obi against visiting Edo State without first seeking his approval, a statement that has drawn widespread criticism.

This incident marks the second time Obi has been warned by a governor from an All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state, even in situations tied to humanitarian activities.

The first such warning came from Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.

In his latest remarks, Governor Okpebholo said Obi would be visiting the state “at his own risk,” adding, “If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”

He further alleged that during a previous visit, when Obi donated N15 million to a nursing school in the state, it resulted in unrest in Benin City that led to loss of lives.

Responding in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, CUPP said the Governor’s comments clearly disregard constitutional rights guaranteed to Nigerian citizens, particularly the freedom of movement.

“Okpebholo’s recorded remarks, warning Obi not to ‘dare’ enter Edo State without his permission and stating that his security ‘is not guaranteed,’ constitute a veiled death threat against a law-abiding citizen exercising his constitutional rights,” the statement said.

The group urged political leaders, civil society groups, and human rights advocates to condemn what it called an unacceptable act of political intimidation and thuggery.

It added, “His only offense is traveling across the country to support hospitals, schools, nurses, and IDPs at their points of need. Should a governor fear acts of charity?

“Governor Monday Okpebholo’s threat against Peter Obi is a disgraceful act that strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s democracy. It is a direct assault on the constitutional rights to freedom of movement, expression, and association, and it reflects a dangerous arrogance that has no place in governance.

“This incident must serve as a wake-up call for Nigerians to defend their constitutional protections and demand accountability from those in power.

“The rule of law must prevail, and no individual, no matter their position, should be allowed to trample on the rights of citizens. Edo State and Nigeria deserve better than this shameful display of leadership.”
