The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) successful release of the voter registration appears to have temporarily hampered the efforts of 27 lawmakers, supported by Nyesom Wike, to halt the planned local council elections in Rivers State.

Due to claimed noncompliance with the 90-day notice of election, the Wike camp obtained a court injunction prohibiting INEC from providing the register to the Rivers Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). The election was held by the Sim Fubara camp, but on February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court declared it to be invalid.

The RSIEC declared new elections after the governor removed the LGA chairmen. The 27 legislators rejected the move and invited the RSIEC boss to the floor of the House.

Retired judge Adolphus Enebeli, the head of RSIEC, declined to go. An arrest warrant was issued for him.

As a sign that a significant barrier has been overcome, the RSIEC has now declared that it has received the voter registration.

RSIEC stated that it is happy to notify all interested parties, political parties, and the state’s well-meaning citizens; “That as part of ongoing preparations for the forth-coming Local Government Council Elections, the Commission has secured from the INEC Headquarters, the updated Register of Voters for Rivers State together with the current list of Registered Political Parties in Nigeria.

“These two important documents were released to RSIEC today vide letter No. INEC/RV/S/VR/494/155 dated 13th March, 2025 (copy attached herewith).

“The chairman and members of the Commission hereby reassure the good people of Rivers State of the Commission’s resolve to conduct a credible, free and fair elections come Saturday, 9th August, 2025.”

Tamunotonye P. Tobins, Commissioner in charge of Media & Civic Education, signed the statement.

The registration is interpreted as the FG’s decision to no longer back those who seek to thwart Rivers State’s LGA elections.
