According to reports, two serving commissioners of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, or RSIEC, have stepped down.

Both Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah, Commissioner in charge of Budget/Research and Statistics, and Professor Simeon Emenike Weli, Commissioner in charge of Political Parties/Monitoring, are impacted.

In separate letters to the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, and the Chairman of the RSIEC, Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, they announced their resignation.

The commissioners resigned, citing the existing state of affairs at RSIEC and the recent ruling by the Supreme Court that declared the commission’s October 5, 2024, Local Government Elections invalid.

They also addressed continuing developments within the commission, indicating that these circumstances obliged them to step down from their roles.

The commissioners thanked the commission for giving them the chance to support Rivers State’s expansion and advancement.

ZINGTIE recalls that last Wednesday, when the Supreme Court ruled that the October 5, 2024 election was invalid, RSIEC declared that the replacement date for the state local government elections would be August 9, 2025.
