Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has shared his thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo’s sudden departure from the Portuguese national team earlier this month.

Ronaldo reportedly ended his involvement with Portugal following a disagreement with the team’s manager, Jorge Jesus.

In a detailed statement, the former Real Madrid forward explained his decision, claiming that Jesus had failed to honour his commitments, which prompted him to withdraw from the national team.

However, Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and supporters while indicating his willingness to accept any disciplinary action from the Portuguese Football Association.

Following his unexpected departure, the association placed him under a provisional suspension.

Rooney, who previously played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United, has now weighed in on the controversy.

Speaking during an appearance on The Stick to United podcast, the former England captain criticised Ronaldo’s actions, describing his conduct as unacceptable.

“He’s such a great player, and I think when you see, was it the same day Messi was retiring from Argentina?

“And then for him to come out of the Portugal squad that way and then put that statement out is just wrong in every sense, from my point of view.

“To undermine your manager, to undermine your teammates the way he has, is just so wrong. Everything about it is just wrong, from a footballing point of view,” Rooney said.

Rooney also suggested that Ronaldo was finding it difficult to come to terms with the approaching end of his international career, arguing that this could be influencing his recent behaviour.

He added: “The unfortunate reality is that this situation confronts every player. One must eventually end one’s international career, and regrettably, he is managing this transition poorly, rendering the situation increasingly uncomfortable to watch.

“You cannot dictate to the manager what statements must be made during a press conference; such conduct transcends anything I have previously encountered.”
