Following his protests over the demolition of his palm plantation in Ukambi, Cross River State, Chief Inspector Raphael A. Ushie of the Nigeria Immigration Service tragically died in May 2019.
Many local farmlands were destroyed in the process of clearing the area for the construction of the Obudu International Airport.
Ushie, who was getting close to retirement, had used his whole life savings to build the plantation. He hurried home to confront the advancing bulldozers after hearing that the farmlands of other settlements had been destroyed and that Ukambi was next.
Before other members of the community joined the demonstration, he stood in his uniform in front of the machinery, trying to stop the demolition.
Ushie passed out during the protest and was first brought to an Obudu hospital. He passed away at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital after being moved there due to the seriousness of his condition.
No reimbursement was given for the destroyed plantation or associated costs, even though the family suffered a loss.
The widow of Ushie was left to provide for their children’s education on her own. Restitution for the family’s loss has not been made as of yet.
In March 2025, Ushie’s daughter, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, who is now 24 years old, is in Lagos State as a member of the National Youth Service Corps.
She recently made headlines for a TikTok video that went viral and criticized President Bola Tinubu’s government for rising living expenses.
She lamented the financial hardships that citizens suffer, including the insufficiency of the NYSC allowance to pay essential living expenditures, and called Tinubu a “terrible president” in her heartfelt message.
Following her comment, the NYSC called Rita for questioning citing violations of corps members’ conduct guidelines which ban publicly criticizing officials.
National discussion over free speech and citizens’ rights to voice their complaints has been spurred by this action.
The government’s approach has drawn public criticism from individuals such as Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential contender, who claims that stifling dissent is incompatible with Nigeria’s democratic ideals.
Rita’s outrage is representative of the general annoyance of Nigerians who are struggling financially and who feel excluded due to structural inefficiencies.
Tensions between citizens and authorities over land rights, freedom of expression, and economic policies are evident in her family’s experience, which includes the loss of their patriarch who protested land demolition and her current struggles.
The situation keeps changing, emphasizing the necessity of communication between citizens and the government in order to resolve complaints and preserve democratic values.
